Hello,
Thanks in advance for your time. I am a citizen spouse (green card received after 6 years of marriage), green card expiring in less than three months. Needed to figure out my best option based on the time crunch - apply for citizenship or renew green card?
Regards,
Amit Kohli

Actually you need to renew your green card if you apply for naturalization less than 6 months before the expiration date on your green card. If you apply six months or more before your green card's expiration date, you do not need to renew it even if your naturalization application may still be pending when your green card expires. So even if you apply for naturalization you need to renew your green card.

You need to have a valid green card at the time of filing in your us citizenship form. If you file in your N-400 now, you will be out of permanent resident status by the time your application is processed. This is not allowed by the USCIS. So go in for a green card renewal first and then file in your N-400.

If you fail to go through the Green Card Renewal process by not completing Form I-90, an expired Green Card does not remove the legal status of a Permanent Resident. An expired Green Card can affect the person's rights and obligations.
